Steering Rack and Pinion

A steering rack and pinion system is the most common steering system found in modern cars. Steering rack and pinion supercedes the steering gear box system because it is lighter, cheaper, and offers better performance and reliability. With the exception of larger vehicles, all cars manufactured today come with some form of steering rack and pinion units straight out of the factory.

The mechanism behind a steering rack and pinion system is fairly simple. The rack is a flat piece of metal with a teethed surface, placed parallel to the ground. The pinion is attached to the steering shaft and has gear sets which fit and run perpendicular to the rack. When the wheel is turned, the pinion gear spins above the racks surface thus moving the rack and the wheels. This is the basis of all steering rack and pinion operations. The steering rack and pinion is a gearset which converts the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion needed to turn the wheel. Additionally, the steering rack and pinion reduces the effort needed to turn the wheel due to its gear reduction. The steering rack and pinion systems installed in cars today are power steering rack and pinion units. However, many cars in the past came with a manual steering rack and pinion. The main difference between the two is the inclusion of a hydraulic pump and steering fluid to further reduce the effort needed to turn the car.
