Saturn Corporation is an American automobile manufacturer that was a subsidiary of General Motors. Established in 1985, it was originally headquartered in Spring Hill, Tennessee before it moved to Detroit, Michigan in 2007. In 1982, General Motors launched a project, codenamed “Saturn”, to develop a small car that would fit in with the car market that was recovering from the Oil Crisis of the 1970s. The first prototype Saturn car was released in the mid-80s. The first Saturn models, the Saturn SC and Saturn SL, were released in 1990. The brand expanded the S-series with the SW in 1992. In 2000, the company rolled out the L-series of mid-size automobiles and station wagons. The brand's first SUV, the Vue, was rolled out in 2001. This was followed by the Ion in 2003 which was released as a replacement for the S-series.
In 2005, Saturn rolled out the Relay, the only minivan in its lineup. The Saturn Sky, which was rolled out in 2006, was introduced in the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). The brand replaced the L-Series with a mid-size car, the Aura. The car was named the North American Car of the Year in 2007. In 2008, the company released the Outlook, a crossover SUV (CUV). In December, 2008, General Motors announced its plans to discontinue some of its brands, including Saturn. After a series of negotiations, GM announced its plans to sell Saturn to the Penske Automotive Group. However, the deal with Penske fell through and GM officially discontinued Saturn in October, 2009. The Ion, Vue and Astra are some of the models in the Saturn lineup.
