Volkswagen is a German automobile manufacturer that was established in 1937. It has its headquarters in Wolfsburg. In 1938, Ferdinand Porsche designed the company's first and iconic model: the Volkswagen Beetle. After World War II, the Beetle I, as it came to be called, was introduced to the United Kingdom through the demobilized soldiers who took their cars with them. The VW Beetle came to the United States in 1949. In 1950, the brand released the Type 2, that was formally referred to as the VW Bus. The brand expanded its lineup in 1961 with the introduction of the Type III models. In 1964, Volkswagen acquired the Auto Union, a group of German companies that included Audi. This acquisition proved very beneficial to Volkswagen in 1973, when the company's sales were struggling.

The Dasher (also called the Passat) was first of the series of new models released. The car was offered in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. This was followed by the Scirocco, a sports coupe in 1974. The car remained in production until 1992, and was revived again in 2008. The Golf was also released in 1974 as a replacement for the Beetle. The Jetta, a small family car, was released in 1979. The company's sales fell during the 1980s. The brand released the Fox, a subcompact car in 1983. The Corrado, a sports compact, was released in 1988. In 1994, the brand launched the New Beetle that was based on the retro-themed “Concept One” car. In 2002, Volkswagen added the first crossover vehicle to its lineup with the introduction of the Touareg. The SUV was named “Sport/Utility of the Year” by Motor Trend magazine in 2004. Some of the models in the Volkswagen brand include the Polo, Routan and Rialta.
