Volvo is a Swedish luxury automobile manufacturer that is owned by the Geely Holding Group. It was established in 1927 as a subsidiary of the Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB (SKF). Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav Larson were appointed to head the company's operations as managing director and technical manager, respectively. The first car, the OV 4, was an open carriage vehicle that was equipped with a 3-speed transmission and 1.9L I4 side-valve engine. In 1931, the PV651 was rolled out. It had a longer and wider chassis than the OV 4. The PV444 was introduced in 1944 during the early stages of the Second World War. It was a success within the Swedish market and was released to the global market in 1947. It is Volvo's first uni-body car. The Amazon, a mid-size car, was unveiled in the United States in 1959 at the New York International Auto Show. The Amazon was one of the first cars to be equipped with a three-point safety belt.
The P1800 was the company's first sports car and was first produced in 1961. The brand began manufacturing the 140 Series of automobiles in 1968. The vehicles ranged from the 2-door 142 to the 5-door 145. The '70s saw the 240 series replacing the 140 models. The 240 series of vehicles were equipped with better safety features like collapsible steering columns, rear-facing child-seats and side-collision protection. This was followed by the 340 series in the 1980s. In 1991, the brand released the 850, the first front-wheel drive car to be exported to North America. The model was one of the brand's most popular cars. In 1997, the C70, a convertible coupe was rolled off the assembly lines. In 1999, Ford Motor Company acquired the automobile division of Volvo as part of its Premier Automotive Group (PAG). However, owing to the economic crisis of 2008, Ford decided to sell its Volvo division. Finally in December, 2009, Volvo was taken over by a Chinese company, Geely Holding Company. Some of the models in the brand's current lineup include the S80, V70, XC70 and XC90.
