VW, which is short for Volkswagen, is a German automaker that is headquartered in Wolfsburg. The company was founded in 1937. In 1938, Ferdinand Porsche designed the Volkswagen Beetle, the car that would become the brand's iconic model. The Beetle was introduced to the British roads through the demobilized soldiers of World War II, whom took their cars home with them. The Beetle came to the United States in 1949. The Type 2, formally referred to as the VW Bus, hit the roads in 1950. VW acquired Auto Union, a group of German companies that included Audi, in 1964. The Dasher was the first vehicle released under the new acquisition.

The Scirocco, a sports coupe, was released in 1974. The car was in the production for two generations till 1992, and was reintroduced in 2008. The Golf, a replacement for the Beetle, was also released in 1974. It is a subcompact car and is considered the brand's best-selling model. The Golf MK6 and the Golf MK7 won the World Car of the Year award in 2009 and 2013, respectively. In 1979, the brand released the Jetta, a family car for the VW Passenger Car marque. The car is currently is its sixth generation, which was released in 2011. In 1988, the Corrado, a sports compact was rolled off the assembly lines. The Touareg, released in 2002, was the brand's first SUV. The Vanagon, Tiguan and Eos are some of the other models of this brand.
