Camshaft

The camshaft is an integral part of your engine. It is a shaft that is fitted along the length of the cylinder head and has oblong lobes called cams fitted on it. These cams aid in the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves of the engine cylinders. The rotation of the camshaft is synchronized to that of the crankshaft by means of a gear mechanism or more commonly, through a timing belt or chain. Since the camshaft is synced to the crankshaft, the cam lobes operate the valves in time with the motion of the piston.

The valves on each cylinder in an engine are operated by a pair of cam lobes. There are three kinds of cam configurations: single overhead, double overhead and pushrod. In the single overhead cam configuration, the engine has only one cam per head. The camshaft is driven by the crankshaft through the timing belt. The cams press down on the valves to open them. In double overhead model, the engine has two cams per head. The configuration is usually used in engines that have 4 or more valves per cylinder. In the pushrod configuration, the camshaft is mounted inside the engine instead of the head.

Improper alignment of the rocker arm and the cam lobes can cause your camshaft to fail. The lobes can become worn out, affecting the timing sequence of the opening and closing of the valves. If you find that your engine is misfiring or if you hear an abnormal noise from the valve train, it is an indication that your camshaft is out of sync. You should replace a damaged camshaft as soon as possible to prevent your engine and other parts from sustaining severe damage.
