Driveshaft

The Driveshaft is a rotating piece of metal that connects the engine to gears that turn the wheels of the vehicle. It is constructed either using a solid steel tube or with hollow tubes of steel or aluminum. Drive shafts are connected to the axle and the engine's drive assembly by means of Universal joints (U-joints). When the fuel inside the engine ignites, it explodes and expands, which generates power. This action pushes the piston in and out of the engine cylinders. The pistons are attached to an output shaft which turns as they pump. This output shaft links to a system of gears, which regulates the relative speed of the wheels and the engine. This is the vehicle's transmission.

Rotational energy passes through the transmission to an output shaft which turns in a perpendicular direction to the car's motion. The drive shaft takes this rotation to the pinion/input shaft in the rear differential, where it is passed though two gears which turn the rotational energy by 90 degrees. This turns the car's axle in the required direction. Drive shafts are also known as Cardan shafts.

A faulty drive shaft produces vibrations that are easily noticeable while driving, and knocking sounds from beneath the vehicle. Additionally, you may encounter difficulty while steering your vehicle. If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above, you should consider inspecting the drive shaft. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of driveshafts for every car make and model.
