The Door Actuator is a device that is used to release your vehicle's door latch when it is unlocked. The door actuator can be activated manually by a switch or button or remotely through your car's remote key fob. The actuator is located below the door latch. It is connected by rods to the door latch and to the knob that juts out of the door. The actuator consists of a series of spur gears that serve as gear-reduction for the output of a small electric engine. The final gear is a rack-and-pinion gear that is connected to the actuator rod. This final gear converts the rotational motion of the engine to a linear motion that moves the rod up and down.

When the actuator moves the latch up, it engages the outer door latch with the door-locking mechanism. However, when the latch is down, the locking mechanism is disconnected from the outer latch, and the door can only be unlocked from inside or through the remote control. In power door locks, the locking and unlocking mechanism is controlled by the car's body controller. The controller monitors the incoming sources of the lock/unlock signal and responds accordingly. These sources could be a digital code from a touch-pad, the right radio frequency from the remote device and the switches inside the car.
