Intake Manifold

The Intake Manifold is part of your car's engine whose function is to equally distribute the fuel-air mixture to each of the cylinders. Your vehicle needs the right amount of fuel-air mixture at the right time to reach its full efficiency. The intake manifold is usually bolted to the engine block. They have a series of hollow channels or ports that are fitted to line up with the heads of the engine's cylinders. The intake manifold receives the air-fuel mixture from the carburetor or fuel-injection system and releases it into the cylinder during its intake stroke.

The construction and volume of the intake manifold affect the volumetric efficiency of the engine. The intake manifold has a central volume called the plenum which has a row of tubes called runners. The runners extend into the intake ports of the cylinder heads. When the fuel-air mixture flows through the narrow intake ports, the intake manifold compresses the air-fuel mixture increasing its velocity and flow. Factory made intake manifolds are usually short with narrow intake ports that limit the amount of air/fuel mixture entering the intake ports. High-performance manifolds are longer with wider intake ports, resulting in a higher efficiency.

A leak in the intake manifold can have adverse effects on your car's engine. A leaking manifold will result in the manifold sucking in extra air from outside through the leak. This will cause more air to enter intake ports and disrupt the air-fuel ratio in the cylinders. This reduces the engine's efficiency. If you find that your vehicle responds sluggishly to the throttle or has a rough idle, it is a possible indication of a leaky intake manifold. You should find a replacement for the faulty manifold at the earliest to prevent any further detriment to your car's engine. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of intake manifolds for every car make and model.
