Intake Plenum Gasket
The Intake Plenum Gasket is fitted between the upper intake manifold and the lower intake manifold of your engine. It is usually made of rubber, paper or silicone. The intake manifold is primarily responsible for distributing the air evenly to all the cylinders. The upper intake manifold consists of the throttle body and the EGR valves. The lower intake manifold includes the runners that distribute the air to each of the cylinders.
The intake plenum gasket ensures that the air-fuel mixture does not leak out of the plenum and prevents external contaminants from entering the intake manifold. The gasket, also called a caterpillar gasket owing to its design, is usually made of rubber, steel or silicone. Over time, the intake plenum gasket can become worn out due to age or due to the excessive heat generated within the intake manifold. This would result in a drastic change in the engine's efficiency as the unmetered air leaking in to the plenum would affect the air/fuel ratio for optimum fuel consumption. In addition, it would also cause the coolant and engine oil to leak.
If your engine experiences a rough idle or a sluggish acceleration, it is a possible indicator of a damaged gasket. Excessive overheating of the engine due to a low level of coolant is also another indicator of a leaky gasket. A damaged or cracked gasket should be replaced at the earliest to prevent your vehicle's performance from deteriorating.
