History of Smart Cars
Smart Automobile is an automotive division of Daimler AG that specializes in the production of microcars. Established in the year 1994, its headquarters are located in B'blingen, Germany. Its main factory is situated in Hambach, France. The design concept for smart cars was brought out by SMH (makers of the Swatch brand of watches) CEO Nicholas Hayek in the late 1980s. A joint venture between Daimler-Benz and Swatch led to the formation of Micro Compact Car AG (MCC) in 1994. The brand was later named as 'Smart'. The company now operates under the Mercedes Benz division of Daimler-Benz.
Backed by Volkswagen, the brand released its first model, the Smart City Coupe, in 1998. The brand's vehicles are marketed as 'smart' (all in lower-case) in Asia, North and South America, Australia and Europe. The brand's logo has a letter "c" and an arrow to denote "compact" and "forward thinking", respectively. Smart vehicles are known for their fuel economy and efficiency.
The Smart Fortwo, Roadster, Crossblade, Forfour, City-Coupe and City-Cabrio are the various production models of the brand. The latest version of the Smart ForTwo was described by Top Gear magazine as "brilliant" and "fun".
