Thermostat
The Thermostat is basically a heat-sensitive valve that regulates the flow of coolant from the radiator into the engine block. It is usually fixed on the upper radiator hose, between the radiator and the engine. The primary function of the thermostat is to maintain the engine at the optimal temperature for its proper functioning. It prevents the engine from over-heating/under-heating while running. It also allows the engine to warm-up quickly when it is started, thereby reducing engine wear, deposits and emissions. A small cylinder, located on the engine side of the thermostat, is filled with wax that melts at a certain temperature. A rod that is connected to a valve is pressed into the wax. When the wax melts, it expands and pushes the rod out of the cylinder to open the valve. Depending on the operating temperature of the engine, the thermostat controls the flow of coolant into the engine. When the engine's operating temperatures exceeds a certain level, the valve is opened and when the temperature goes below a certain level, the valve is closed.
A bad thermostat can wreak havoc with the cooling system of your engine. An over-heating or under-heating engine are some of the primary symptoms that indicate thermostat malfunction. Engine over-heating can be a symptom of a thermostat stuck in a closed position while an under-heating engine can be a symptom of a thermostat stuck in an open position. Adding to these symptoms, you will also find a drastic drop in your engine's performance due to its temperature fluctuation. Extreme cases of engine overheating can also lead to steam coming out of your engine. If your thermostat turns out to be the culprit behind these inconveniences, replace it with one of Buy Auto Parts' meticulously-tested, high-quality thermostats.
