History of Audi Cars & Parts

Audi is a German manufacturer of automobiles with a complex origin story. The founder, August Horsch, started a car company with his last name in 1899 that never actually produced a car. Following a dispute with his chief financial officer, August left Horsch and founded Audi, whose name comes from a Latin translation of his surname. In 1932, Horsch and Audi merged back together, along with DKW and Wanderer, to form Auto Union. This new company adopted the four ring logo still used by Audi today, with one ring to represent each company. Volkswagen acquired a controlling stake in Auto Union in 1964 and chose to market their newly-developed front-wheel-drive vehicles under the Audi name. The 100, a mid-size car, was unveiled in 1968. The 1970s saw the introduction of models such as the 80, 50 and 200 5T.

In 1980, the company developed a rally car, the Quattro, the first German large-scale production vehicle to have a permanent all-wheel drive. In 1994, the Audi A8 was introduced with an aluminum space frame technology, called Audi Space Frame, which saves weight and improves torsion rigidity. The A2, a compact MPV-styled supermini, was released in 1999. It was around this time that the first Audi part online was available.
