Brake Vacuum Pump
Brake Vacuum Pump
The Brake Vacuum Pump produces the necessary vacuum required for the operation of the brake system. It is usually fitted on the engine and is powered by the camshaft. The brake vacuum pump is a rotary or reciprocating device which is used in vehicles which do not have a sufficient inlet manifold depression. It generates a negative pressure which varies from 10 to 12 pounds per square inch (psi). The brake vacuum pump draws air from the vacuum system and pumps it to the air intake system via the crankcase ventilation. It gets lubricating oil from the oil circuit of the engine.
Automobiles with diesel and Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines have brake vacuum pumps. The earlier vacuum pumps were piston or diaphragm pumps while modern pumps are usually vane pumps. A hard pedal which requires greater pressure to stop the vehicle may be a symptom of a faulty brake vacuum pump. You should replace a bad brake vacuum pump as soon as possible to prevent possible damage to your braking mechanism.
