Electronic Power Assist Column
The Electronic Power Assist Column is a part of your vehicle's power steering system. It uses an electric motor and torque sensors to provide assistive torque to the steering column. The torque sensors detect the torque and angular position of the steering column along with the speed of the vehicle. Based on the sensor inputs, the engine control unit (ECU) calculates the amount of assistive torque that should be applied. This information is transferred to the electric motor which rotates the gear with the appropriate force needed to reduce the torque applied by the driver.
The Electronic Power Assist (EPA) steering system is more efficient than hydraulic systems because these systems only draw power when the power assist is needed. This reduces the fuel consumption in the EPA system. The EPA steering system also has the advantage of incorporating a failsafe method to compensate for the loss of power steering when the ECU or other components fail. In such cases, the EPA system disconnects the motor from the ECU and reduces the power assist in order to keep the other components in the system from failing.
If there is any failure in the power assist column, you will sense a loss of ease while steering and the power steering system warning light will flash on your dashboard. You should replace any faulty components in the EPA system at the earliest. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of electronic power assist columns for every car make and model.
