Intake Plenum
Intake Plenum
The Intake Plenum is a part of your vehicle's intake manifold. The primary function of the intake manifold is to transfer the fuel-air mixture to the cylinders. During the fuel distribution, the pressure in the manifold should be higher than that in the cylinders during their intake stroke. The intake plenum's function is to produce this high pressure. It is basically a pressurized air enclosure.
The manifold has a row of individual tubes called runners that extend out of the plenum. They supply air/fuel mixture to the respective cylinders. The runners occupy a smaller area of the plenum surface. The plenum/runners are based on the Hemholtz's resonance principle of creating air resonance in a cavity.
A faulty intake plenum could cause adverse effects on your engine's efficiency. If there is a leak in the intake plenum or manifold, it would result in the manifold taking in more air than necessary through the leak. This is because the pressure in the manifold is lower than that of the ambient air in the engine. This excess air will reduce the amount of gasoline that can be fed to the cylinders, reducing the overall efficiency of the engine. If you find that your car is sluggish in responding to a throttle press or fails to stop as soon as you turn the ignition off, it is a possible sign of a faulty intake plenum.
