Mazda is a Japanese automobile manufacturer that is headquartered in Aki District, Hiroshima. It was established in 1920 by Jujiro Matsuda as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Company. It originally manufactured machine tools and moved to the production of vehicles in 1931. The Mazda-Go, a three-wheeled open truck, was the first automobile manufactured by the company. Following the Second World War, the company rolled out the Romper, a 4-wheel light truck. Mazda's first two-door passenger-car was the R360 which was rolled out in 1960. The '60s also saw the company start its development on the Wankel rotary engine. The engine was first used in the Cosmo Sport. However, the 1973 oil crisis saw a downturn in the sales of cars that were equipped with the Wankel rotary engine.
In 1971, the company rolled out the Titan, a commercial truck. Mazda entered into a partnership with Ford Motor Company in 1979. In 1989, the brand released the Mazda Multipurpose Van (MPV). The Navajo, a variant of Ford's Explorer, was rolled out in 1991. Mazda also used Ford's Ranger as the base for the B-series trucks that were marketed in the United States. The Millenia, a luxury sedan, was rolled out in 1992. In 2001, the Tribute, a compact SUV was rolled out. The CX-7 and CX-9 are crossover-SUV's that were released in 2007. Other popular models of the brand include the 3, 6, and Miata.
