History Saab Cars & Parts

Saab Automobile is a Swedish car manufacturer that has its headquarters in Trollhättan, Sweden. The brand's origins can be traced back to when the Svenska Aeroplan AB (Saab AB) embarked on a project to design its first automobile in 1945. After a series of prototypes called "Ursaab", the first production vehicle " the Saab 92 " was rolled out in 1949. The car had a compact layout and was fitted with a water-cooled, 2-cylinder thermo-siphon engine. The 92 was upgraded to the Saab 93 in 1955. The brand's first performance vehicle, the Sonnet, was rolled out in 1955. In 1969, Saab merged with Scania-Vabis AB to form Saab-Scania. Under this merger, the Saab 99 was redesigned with a combi-coupe body style. The Saab 900, a compact executive, was rolled out in 1978. It is the brand's most popular and iconic model. In the same year, Saab released the Saab 600, a rebadged version of Fiat's Lancia Delta.

In 1985, under the Type Four platform agreement with Fiat, Saab released the 9000. In 1987, Saab ran into financial troubles, and in 1990, General Motors (GM) bought a 50% share of the stocks. The brand's fortunes turned around when they released the new Saab 900. In 1997, on the brand's 50th anniversary, it released the 9-5 as a replacement for the 9000. GM acquired the remaining shares of the company in 2000. Under the new direction, the brand released the 9-2X and the 9-7X in 2004 and 2005, respectively. However, by 2008, Saab's sales were struggling. At the end of the year, GM announced its plans to sell Saab. Though many companies offered to buy the struggling automobile maker, none of the deals worked out and Saab filed for bankruptcy in 2009. Some of the other models of the brand include the 9-2X, 9-4X and 9-7X.
