History of Subaru Cars & Parts

Subaru is a Japanese automobile manufacturer that is a subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), a transportation conglomerate. It was established in 1953 and has its headquarters in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The company was originally established as the Nakajima Aircraft Company and it manufactured aircraft for Japan during the Second World War. After the War, in 1953, FHI (as it was now called) turned to automobile production.

The first car was named by the CEO of the company, Kenji Kita, as the Subaru 1500. The car was named after the Japanese word for the Pleiades constellation. The 350 holds distinction as the first Subaru car that created an aftermarket Subaru part supply chain. The Subaru 360, a microcar which was rolled out in 1958, was the brand's first mass produced car. It was equipped with a 360cc engine and remained in production till 1971. In 1964, Subaru rolled out its first front-wheel drive vehicle, the 1000. The kei car was also the first production vehicle to be equipped with a boxer engine. The R-2 was rolled out in 1969 to replace the 360. As the 60s rolled into the 70s, Subaru’s kept rolling off the factory floor and Subaru parts kept up in steady supply!

In 1971, the company introduced the Rex, a kei car that quickly overtook the R-2 in popularity. In the same year, the Leone, a compact car that was powered by the Subaru EA boxer engine, was rolled off the assembly lines. Subaru produced the coupe utility variant of the Leone, the BRAT (Bi-drive, Recreational All-terrain Transporter), in 1978.

The Legacy, which is the brand's flagship model, is a mid-size car that was first manufactured in 1989. In 1993, Subaru discontinued the Leone and replaced it with the Impreza, a compact model that was offered in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions. The car is currently in its 4th generation, which was rolled out in 2011. In 1995, Subaru unveiled the Forester, a compact crossover, at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The Forester introduction also ushered in the discount Subaru parts online market. The Tribeca, which is named after the neighborhood of the same name in New York City, is a mid-size crossover SUV that was rolled out in 2005.
