The history of ACDelco dates back to 1899 when Albert Champion established the Champion Ignition Company. In 1909, Champion decided to take his business to the Buick Motor Company, after which he manufactured spark plugs for the AC Spark Plug Division, the joint venture between Buick and Champion. In 1916, William C. Durant formed the United Motors Corporation, which later became a part of General Motors in 1918, along with Delco, Kiaxon and Remy Electric Company. In 1927, following Albert Champion's death, General Motors purchased his entire business. The United Motor Service was renamed the United Delco Division in 1971. Finally, in 1974, ACDelco was formed as a result of the merger of United Delco and AC Spark Plug.
In 1996, the brand passed the ultimate endurance test when an ACDelco battery from a plane that had crashed in 1944 was found under Lake Michigan. It was found to be intact and in working order despite being submerged for over 50 years!
