Borgeson Universal Company is an American manufacturer of automotive parts that focuses on the production of steering components. The company was founded in 1914 as a manufacturer of universal joints for the lathes and milling industry. Its headquarters are in Torrington, Connecticut. In the 1920s, the company started building universal joints for automobiles. The brand’s current line of products includes a range of universal joints, vibration reducers, steering columns, couplers and adapters, Pitman arms, Saginaw manual boxes, pumps, brackets and hoses. Borgeson parts are also supplied for industrial, military and aerospace applications. Currently, the brand offers a range of parts for the OEM, street rod, pickup truck and racing industries. In 2001, the company took over Mullins Steering Gears. The brand acquired the OE manufacturing authority for building Saginaw manual steering gear boxes from BSB Automotive Technologies in Canada in 2012.
The brand manufactures universal joints (U-joints) in single-needle and double-needle designs. They are made of steel, stainless steel or aluminum. The universal joints are also offered for racing applications. Universal joints are four-way joints that connect the driveshaft to the differential and the output shaft of the transmission or the transfer case. Borgeson's needle bearing universal joints eliminate backlash and radial play. These joints require almost no maintenance as they are well-lubricated and sealed. The company produces double-needle bearing universal joints to handle angles over 35 degrees. These universal joints are built in all spline and DD designs.
Borgeson develops vibration reducers to prevent the steering components from wearing out prematurely due to vibrations. Installing a Borgeson vibration reducer offers a vibration-less, smooth and superior steering experience. The steering shaft runs from the steering wheel to the steering gear or rack. It transfers the motion of the steering wheel to the other steering parts. Borgeson's steering shafts are made of high-quality stainless steel and aluminum to ensure durability. They are available in splined, Double-D and telescopic configurations. The purpose of steering column is to transfer the torque of the steering wheel into the power that turns the wheels of the vehicle. The brand's steering columns are made of billet aluminum or stainless steel with a brushed or brilliant polished finishing. Borgeson manufactures two generations of GM integral power steering gear boxes: Saginaw/Delphi 700 Series and Delphi 600 Series.
Borgeson is synonymous with state-of-the-art machinery and high-quality products. While focusing on the performance and quality, the brand ensures that its products provide maximum safety. For instance, the brand does not recommend using steering shafts with a diameter less than 3/4” due to safety concerns. The brand’s high level of commitment towards safety earned it the Safety Product of the Year award in the years 1992 and 2001.
