Turbochargers and superchargers are forced induction systems used to increase the horsepower generated by the engine. Though both systems are basically compressors and are employed to serve the same function, they are driven by different sources. Turbochargers are driven by the exhaust gases. They incorporate a turbine which spins due to the exhaust gases. The spinning turbine compresses the air and renders it to the engine. On the other hand, the superchargers are driven by the engine itself via the crankshaft. The crankshaft and superchargers are connected by a belt-pulley mechanism. As the crankshaft turns, the belt-pulley mechanism causes the supercharger's compressor to generate the compressed air.
IHI Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, is a manufacturer of turbochargers and superchargers. The brand's turbos and superchargers are employed in a range of vessels, power generators and automobiles. The brand also produces ships, aero-engines and industrial machinery. The company has produced over 40 million superchargers for automobiles. IHI's turbos and superchargers are manufactured in various facilities including those in the United States, China and Europe. IHI's turbos are used in a range of compact cars, buses and trucks of makes including Nissan, Isuzu, Maserati, Mitsubishi, Ferrari and Volvo.
The history of the company dates back to 1853 when the Ishikawajima Shipyard was established. It was in 1929 that Ishikawajima Automotive Works, an automobile manufacturing division was founded. The company was renamed from Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Limited to IHI Corporation in 2007.
To serve the turbo and supercharger requirements of the North American market, the brand established its subsidiary named IHI Turbo America (ITA) in Shelbyville, Illinois. ITA focuses on designing, developing and marketing turbos and superchargers. It was established in 1980. ITA started offering screw turbochargers in 2004. It is the only firm in the world to mass produce screw turbochargers. The current line of ITA's turbochargers includes RHE, RHF Series while that of the superchargers includes S Series. ITA's turbos and superchargers are synonymous with reliability, durability and high-quality.
ITA was the first auto-parts manufacturer to use a mixed-flow turbine in its RHE Series of turbochargers. These turbos are designed for truck engines with a large displacement. RHE Series turbos provide decreased emissions and high-pressure ratios. The RHF Series of turbos are built for passenger car engines with a small displacement. The S Series of superchargers are constructed using advanced screw compressor technology. This technology allows for a positive displacement of airflow at the default pressure ratio. The advantages of the S Series superchargers include compact size and high efficiency.
