It was formed through a merger of Markin Automobile body and Commonwealth Motors. Checker produced the iconic American taxi cab that was recognized for its durability in heavy use. The vehicle's significant features included trunks and large rear seats.

Checker manufactured truck bodies for Hudson in the late 1930s. It also built truck bodies for the REO Motor Car Company. Checker manufactured tank recovery vehicles and tank retrieval trailers during the Second World War. The company started producing consumer passenger cars in 1958. The first Checker model for the consumer market, the Superba, was produced in 1960. It was followed by the Checker Marathon, which still is the most popular taxi cab vehicle in the U.S. The firm became defunct in the year 2010 due to bankruptcy.
