Distributor Cap

The Distributor Cap is part of the ignition system of your car. Its primary function, along with the rotor, is to transfer the voltage from the ignition coil to the engine cylinders at the right time for the spark-plug to generate the ignition spark. The rotor, which is connected directly to the ignition coil, rotates within the distributor cap. A high-voltage pulse is generated whenever the rotor terminal passes the cylinder contact. The pulse is then passed into spark-plug to ignite the fuel mixture and fire up the engine.

The distributor cap has one post for each cylinder. The rotor is attached to the distributor shaft which in turn is driven by the engine's camshaft. The engine's camshaft ensures the synchronization between the distributor and the engine. The rotor connects to the center terminal of the distributor cap through a carbon brush. When the engine camshaft rotates, the outer edge of the rotor passes each terminal of the cylinders in turn to fire their respective spark plugs.

Owing to its construction and function, the distributor cap is easily susceptible to damage and failure. A failed distributor cap would throw the entire ignition cycle out of sync. If you experience unusual shaking when your car is idling or hear a squealing or clicking sounds when you start your engine, it is likely that you have a damaged distributor cap. You should replace your distributor cap in such cases to prevent your car's ignition system from failing altogether. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of distributor caps for every car make and model.
