Mercury Cars & Parts
Mercury was an automobile marque of the Ford Motor Company that was launched to market the entry-level models of the Ford line-up. It was established in 1938 by Edsel Ford, the son of Henry Ford, with the intent to be an intermediate marque between the priciest and the cheapest Ford models. The Mercury Eight, equipped with a flathead V8 engine, was the brand's first model. In 1945, Mercury was merged with Lincoln to form the Lincoln-Mercury division of Ford. The Turnpike Cruiser, released in 1957, was the brand's flagship model. It was replaced by the Park Lane, a full-size automobile in 1958. The Comet, a stylish compact car, was rolled out in 1960, and was followed by the Meteor in 1961. The Cougar, which was based off the Ford Mustang, was released in 1969.
The '70s were a period of reduced sales which saw the release of the subcompact Bobcat in 1974 and the compact sedan Monarch in 1975. Mercury replaced the Monarch with the Zephyr in 1978. The '70s also saw the company import its first European car, the Capri, in 1971. In the mid-1980s, the company mostly downsized and redesigned most of the cars in their lineup. In 1993, the Villager minivan was rolled out through a joint-venture with Nissan. The Mountaineer was the brand's first release in the SUV market and was the first to feature the "waterfall-grille". The company's sales had been steadily declining towards the end of the 2000's, and in June 2010, Ford announced the brand's discontinuation.
The final Mercury vehicle, a Grand Marquis, rolled off the assembly lines in January 2011. Other popular models of the brand include the Monterey, Sable, Topaz and Tracer.
