Renault introduced its flagship model, Renault Fregate, in the year 1951. In the year 1975, Renault acquired Berliet, a part of Citroen. Berliet and Renault's subsidiary Saviem integrated in 1978 to form Renault Vehicules Industrials, which became the only French automaker of heavy commercial vehicles. Europe's first multi-purpose vehicle, the Espace, was released by Renault in 1984.
