It was founded in 1928 and had its headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The Model Q was the first vehicle to be developed by the Chrysler-owned marque in 1928. In 1956, the Fury, a hardtop coupe was introduced. Chrysler discontinued the brand in 2001; the final car to be rolled out was the Neon, a compact car. Other models released by Plymouth include the Acclaim, Laser and Prowler.

The Plymouth Cricket was the badge-engineered version of the Hillman Avenger. It was introduced in North America as a captive import. It was offered in 4-door saloon and 5-door estate body styles. It was equipped with a 1500 cc l4 engine and had a 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission. The Cricket was discontinued in 1973.
