History of Plymouth Cars & Parts

Plymouth was an American automobile manufacturer owned by the Chrysler Corporation. It was headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan. It was started in 1928 as Chrysler's entry into the low-priced automobile market. The first model, the Model Q Coupe was equipped with internal expanding hydraulic brakes. The brand helped the Chrysler Corporation to weather the Great Depression of the 1930s with its lower-priced models.

Through the '30s and '40s, the brand was one of America's popular brands. The Fury, a hardtop coupe, was introduced in 1956. In 1962, the brand rolled out the Barracuda, a fastback coupe that remained in production till 1974. The company released the performance cars, GTX and Road-Runner, in 1967 and 1968, respectively. The Caravelle, a mid-size sedan, was introduced in 1985.

The Laser, a sports coupe rolled out in 1989, was produced in a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors. The year also saw the release of the Acclaim, a mid-size sedan, as a replacement for the Caravelle. In 1994, the brand discontinued three of its models: the Laser and the compacts, Sundance and Colt. These three brands were replaced by a single model, the front-wheel drive compact Neon. The Breeze, a badge-engineered version of the Chrysler Cirrus was released in 1996. It was listed in Car and Driver magazine's 'ten Best' List in 1997. However, by this time, Plymouth sales were struggling and by 2000, the final generation of the Neon was released.

Finally, in 2001, the last Neon was rolled out, marking the discontinuation of the Plymouth brand. Some of the other models of this brand include the Cricket, Scamp, Trailduster and Prowler.
