Cadillac is a US-based automobile manufacturer which is a subsidiary of General Motors Company (GM). It was founded in 1902 when Henry Leland, an engineer, was called in to appraise the plant and equipment in the Henry Ford Company, which was about to be dissolved. On Leland's suggestion, the company was reformed as the Cadillac Automobile Company. The Runabout and Tonneau, which were rolled out in 1902, were the first Cadillac automobiles to be built. They debuted at the New York Auto Show. The company was purchased by General Motors (GM) in 1909, where it became a part of GM's prestige division that was dedicated to the manufacture of luxury and "commercial chassis" vehicles like limousines, hearses and flower cars.
In 1912, Cadillac also became the first brand to incorporate an electrical system for starting, ignition and lighting in their cars. In 1927, the LaSalle convertible coupe was released. Even though Cadillac's sales dropped during the Great Depression, the company released its Series 60 and Series 61 in 1936 and 1939, respectively. After the Second World War, the company introduced tail-fins to its car designs in 1949. The 1950s saw the innovation of the "Autotronic Eye", a mechanism that dimmed the headlights. In the following decades, the brand manufactured a number of luxury models including the Fleetwood, Eldorado and Calais. In the 1980s, the first front-wheel drive compact, the Cimarron was released.
Current popular models of the brand include the CTS, ATS, XTS, Escalade, & XT5.
