Tensioners

Tensioners are spring-loaded pulleys that ensure that the timing belts and chains maintain the right amount of tension along their lengths. The tensioner spring exerts a pressure along the belt, maintaining an intricate hold on the moving belt. It prevents the belt from slipping or from getting stretched across the pulleys. The tensioning arm in a tensioner connects the tensioner pulley to the tension spring. The tensioner also includes a damping mechanism that smooths out the vibrations that are generated in the moving components of the engine.

Over time, tensioners can become worn and can lose their effectiveness. This would cause the timing belt to slip and eventually wear out due to improper alignment and tension. An unsynchronized timing belt would result in a slew of issues including engine misfire and reduced efficiency. If you hear a rattling or squealing noise especially while driving under high loads or if you notice that the timing belt is showing visible signs of wear and tear, it is probably the tensioners that are at fault. It is advisable to change the pulleys and the belt along with the tensioners. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of tensioners for every car make and model.
