Steering Control Valve

The Steering Control Valve is a part of the hydraulic power steering system. It is used to control the flow of fluid into the steering system. The power steering system only comes into play when the driver turns the steering wheel. The steering control valve senses the amount of torque applied to the steering wheel and directs the fluid to exert the right amount of pressure on the steering rack to turn the wheels. This is accomplished through a torsion bar that is connected to the steering wheel and steering gears. When the car is driving on a straight road, the steering valve remains in position and the fluid flows through the system and into the reservoir. An equal pressure is exerted on all sides of the valve.

When the driver turns the vehicle in one direction, the torque on the steering wheel is transferred to the torsion bar. This, in turn, rotates the steering control valve. When the steering control valve turns, the line to the fluid reservoir is vented to the line from the direction opposite to the steering direction, while the pump sends the fluid to the line on the steering direction. Thus, pressure is applied in one direction (the steering direction) on the steering gear while zero pressure is applied in the opposite direction. This forces the steering gear to turn the wheels in the desired direction.
