Air Temperature Sensor
Air Temperature Sensor
The Air Temperature Sensor, also known as the inlet air temperature sensor (IAT sensor), measures the temperature of the incoming air. The output of the sensor is sent to the engine control unit (ECU), which then determines the fuel-injection and ignition timings. The sensor has a variable resistance that depends on the temperature of the air flowing into the sensor. The changing temperature induces a variable voltage across the resistance.
Colder air increases the resistance, resulting in a higher voltage, while hotter air induces a low voltage due to a decreased resistance. The air temperature sensor is usually fitted in the intake manifold along with the mass air flow sensor (MAF). The outputs of the two sensors are routed to the ECU to determine the right air-fuel ratio in the mixture. Owing to its location and function, the sensor is susceptible to mechanical damage and soiling.
A faulty air temperature sensor can cause your ECU to wrongly determine the amount of fuel mixture to be sent to the engine. If your vehicle is taking longer to start, especially in cold weather or if your vehicle is consuming more fuel than necessary, you should check the air temperature sensor for any problems. If the sensor is damaged or worn out, you should replace it at the earliest to prevent any further damage to your car's engine.
