Brake Slave Cylinder
The Brake Slave Cylinder, which is a component of the brake system, slows down or stops the vehicle's wheels by pressing the brake pads against the brake. It is otherwise known as a brake caliper cylinder. While pressing the brake pedal, the brake master cylinder induces pressure on the hydraulic fluid. This pressurized fluid reaches the slave cylinder pistons which push on the brake pads to stop or slow down the car's wheels. In vehicles with a drum brake system, the slave cylinder is usually called the wheel cylinder.
The number and size of slave cylinder pistons are greater in the vehicle's front wheels than in the rear wheels. This is because a higher braking force is required to stop the front wheels. Based on the automobile's braking needs, a proportioning valve divides the hydraulic pressure to the front and rear slave cylinders.
A damaged or broken slave cylinder will cause the hydraulic fluid to leak. This will result in a decreased braking force, which in extreme conditions will result in a loss of braking. Symptoms of a leaky brake slave cylinder include a soft pedal or the pedal sinking to the floor. If you experience any of the aforementioned symptoms, you should consider replacing your slave cylinder, if required, to avoid possible damage to your vehicle's braking system.
