A Honda ignition coil will be exposed to a lot of electricity at high voltages. Inside every ignition coil there are two sets of windings made out of iron that will be laminated around a segmented iron core. The iron core does not form a closed loop around the windings meaning that it has an open magnetic circuit. The energy that is stored in the magnetic field is what gets transferred to the spark plug. Since there are two windings one will be the primary and the other the secondary. The primary winding will have few turns of wire usually in the hundreds. These will connect to two external low voltage terminals on the coil. The positive terminal connects to the ignition switch and battery. The negative terminal connects to the ignition module to provide the ground.

The secondary windings will have thousands of wiring turns are connected to the primary positive terminal at one end and the high voltage secondary output terminal in the center of the coil at the other end. When the ignition module closes the coil primary circuit, and provides a ground, current will flow though the primary windings creating a string magnetic field around the iron core. This charges up the coil. The ignition module opens the coils ground connection, which turns the primary coil windings off causing the magnetic field to collapse. This energy induces a current in the ignition coil’s secondary windings, which can multiply the voltage until there is enough voltage to fire the spark plug.

The heat and vibration can damages the coils windings and insulation leading to shorts or opens in either the primary or secondary windings. The most common type of damage to your ignition coils though comes from a bad spark plugs or plug wires. This happens because if a spark plug or wire stays open or has too much resistance, the ignition coils output voltage can rise. This can cause a short by burning through the coils internal insulation.
