Idler Arm
The Idler Arm is an assembly that supports the car steering linkage in a parallelogram steering linkage, thereby holding the center link at the proper height. It has a pivoting rod located on a bracket. One end of the bracket is attached to the frame of the automobile and the other end is attached to a ball joint or bearings that are connected to the steering control arms. The left and right side of the steering linkage are supported by the idler arm and Pitman arm, respectively. The drag link or center link connects both the arms and attaches them to the vehicle's wheels. When the steering wheel is turned, it causes the Pitman arm to turn. The Pitman arm moves the idler arm in a parallel rotating motion, thereby turning the wheels.
An idler arm tends to wear out easily due to the stress applied on it. A faulty idler arm causes severe tread wear on the outer edges of the tires due to improper alignment of the wheels. It also causes the steering wheel to shake while driving over rough terrain.
A worn and loose idler arm results in excessive freeplay of the steering linkage. It makes the vehicle wander on the road. If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above, you may need to replace your idler arm to prevent possible damage to your car's steering system. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of idler arm for every car make and model.
