History of Bentley Cars & Parts
Bentley Motors Limited is an English luxury automobile manufacturer that was established in 1919. Founded by W.O. Bentley, the company has its headquarters in Cheshire, England and is owned by the German automotive company, Volkswagen Group. A passion for fast and reliable cars led Bentley to build the first ever 3L Bentley engine in 1920. This was followed by the release of the first Bentley automobile in 1921. The early Bentley models were production cars that participated and won the "24 Hours of Le Mans" race multiple times, until the company was acquired by Rolls-Royce in 1931. All cars manufactured by Bentley between the years 1931 and 2004 were manufactured with an inherited or shared Rolls-Royce chassis.
The Mark VI, that featured a 4 liter engine, was released in 1946. This was followed by the R-Type Continental which rolled out in 1952. Production sales dropped heavily in the 1970s until the company was taken over by Vickers in 1980. The company regained its high-performance heritage with the release of the Bentley Mulsanne, which was an updated version of the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit. The Azure, a 2-door convertible built on the Continental platform, was released in 1995. In 1997, Volkswagen outbid BMW to acquire Bentley and in 1998, the Bentley Arnage Red Label became the first car manufactured under Volkswagen's ownership. The Arnage, Continental Flying Spur and Continental GT are some of the well-known models of this brand.
