Engine Cooling Fan - Basic Function

Running a car engine creates a tremendous amount of heat and stress. To prevent the internal temperature from reaching dangerous levels (dangerous for both you and your automobile), the coolant fan helps distribute liquid and gas coolant throughout the engine.

The cooling fan is connected to your car's radiator. Once the temperature goes above a certain limit, the fan turns on. Once enough coolant has been distributed and the temperature falls below a certain limit, the coolant fan turns off.

There are two types of coolant fans. An electric coolant fan is more efficient than a manual cooling fan for your car, because it runs off computerized temperature monitoring. Manual fans are operated by pulleys and are controlled by a thermo fan clutch.

Regardless of cooling fan type, the high heat and stress certainly take a toll on this car part. Most cooling fan failure can be traced to any of the following circumstances:

  • Cracked or displaced blades
  • Low coolant level
  • Bad bearings
  • Electric fan relay problems or temperature sensor issues
  • Broken thermo fan clutch

Warning Signs Your Cooling Fan Needs to be Repaired or Replaced

Look for the following signs that may indicate your cooling fan needs replaced:

  • Cracked or loose radiator connections - this can impact fan performance
  • Elevated engine temperature - when the cooling fan fails, a high temperature is the end result
  • Radiator leak - if your car is leaking radiator fluid, the cooling fan may also be compromised
  • Clicking noise when fan is running - check the fan blades; debris or a cracked blade are usually responsible for this symptom

These are just some of the common indications that your car's cooling fan may not be working properly. If you suspect the cooling fan is failing, it is recommended that your repair or replace the part immediately. Without a working cooling fan, your car will eventually overheat and the engine could be damaged beyond repair.
