Followers and Lifters
The cam lifters and followers are a part of your vehicle's internal combustion engine. The cam follower is a cylindrical device that tracks the shape of the cam lobe and reciprocates the movement to the opening and closing of the valves in the combustion chamber. The follower drives a piston that is enclosed in a cylindrical casing. This casing-piston assembly is known as the lifter. Therefore, the lifters and followers collectively control the valve movement, while synchronizing the valve timing to that of the moving camshaft.
The follower (piston) pushes against a rocker-arm which is connected to the valve's tip. The rocker arm pivots on an axis and pushes against the valve tip to open it. When the rocker-arm stops pressing against it, the valve-tip is restored to its original position by the action of the valve springs, thereby closing the valve. The follower relies on a hydraulic action to drive the piston towards the rocker arm.
While it is not very common, the followers and lifters can get damaged due to poor oil supply or improper maintenance.
