Distributor Rotor

The Distributor Rotor and cap form a part of your vehicle's ignition system. Their function is to transfer the voltage to the cylinders from the ignition coil. The rotor, which is connected directly to the ignition coil, rotates within the distributor cap. As it rotates, it makes contact with the cylinder contact points in the distributor. The number of these points depends on the number of the cylinders in the engine. When the rotor makes contact with the cylinder point, an electric pulse arcs between the rotor and the contact and passes through the spark-plug wire.

The main function of the distributor rotor is timing, to ensure that the spark is generated at the right time to ignite the fuel mixture. The rotor is mounted on the distributor shaft. The distributor shaft is driven by the engine's camshaft to synchronize it to the engine. This synchronization is essential to ensure that the rotor rotates at half the speed of the crankshaft. Therefore, by the time the electric pulse is sent to the spark-plug, the engine's piston will be at the top of its stroke, and about to descend into its compression stroke.

A faulty distributor rotor could result in damage to your car's ignition system and engine. If you hear a clacking or squealing sound when your engine is running or if you experience problems while starting your car, you should consider checking your distributor cap and rotor for possible damage. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of distributor rotors for every car make and model.
