Tire Pressure Monitoring System Sensor [TPMS]

Tire Pressure Monitoring System Sensor [TPMS]

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System Sensor [TPMS] resides inside your car's wheels and is responsible for ensuring that the air pressure in the tires is at its optimum level. When the air pressure drops below the standard, the TPMS warning light is turned on in the vehicle's instrument cluster. The TPMS sensor has a pressure transducer and an RF transmitter to measure and transmit the pressure information, respectively. A central monitoring unit inside the vehicle receives this data and displays it on the instrument cluster.

Since the TPMS sensor is attached to the tire through the TPMS valve stem, it moves with the rotation of the tire. This makes it difficult for the monitoring unit to track the sensor from which it is receiving the data. Therefore, the TPMS sensor needs to be retrained when the tire is moving. This is accomplished by allotting a serial number to each wheel sensor and setting up a reference table in the monitoring unit to identify the correct sensor. The sensor sends both the serial number and the pressure data to the monitoring unit, allowing the unit to correctly interpret the signal from the sensor.

The tire pressure monitoring system sensors are susceptible to corrosion and damage due to their position. Faulty valve stems or broken stem caps can cause debris and unwanted elements to enter the valve cores. A faulty sensor will fail to read the correct pressure inside the tire and fail to warn the drivers about a flat or leaking tire. A failed TPMS sensor should be replaced immediately to avoid the prospect of running your vehicle on under-inflated tires, putting yourself and the vehicle at risk.
