How Much Does a Throttle Body Cost?

How Much Does a Throttle Body Cost

On most vehicles, the throttle body is what you’re actually controlling when you step on the gas pedal. It controls the amount of air fed into the engine, while giving a signal to the ECU so the appropriate amount of fuel is delivered at the same time. Nowadays it’s controlled electronically, but if your vehicle is a little older, you can follow the cable from it all the way down to the pedal.

How to Save Money on a Throttle Body?

Some signs that your throttle body is not functioning properly would be a check-engine light code, or you might notice hesitation under acceleration. Before replacing the throttle body, it’s worth cleaning the original one first to see if that helps. Over time, it can become clogged with dirt or carbon deposits, which will affect its ability to open and close as intended. Some proactive vehicle owners consider this just a part of regular maintenance. You can access it by removing the air intake hose, carefully disconnecting any wires or hoses, and unbolting it from the upper intake manifold. This is a good time to replace the aging throttle body gasket, as well as inspecting the air intake system for any dry, cracked rubber that could be leaking. Some vehicles may have coolant lines running to the throttle body; make sure those are well capped-off to prevent both coolant leaks, and any unwanted air entering the system. If the above recommendations fail to remedy the issue, replacing the unit itself is inevitable. In the table below we’ve included the msrp (list price) of 5 of our best selling throttle bodies as well as our price for that same part.

Throttle Body Labor and Part Costs

Brand new, quality aftermarket replacement throttle bodies for most mainstream vehicles are between $100 and $200. Prices go up from there for OEM replacements. As previously outlined, these aren’t too difficult to replace. If you’re mildly confident in your DIY abilities, you can complete the job in an hour or two. If you prefer to leave that part of it to a professional, then the relative ease of this repair should mean lower labor expenses as well.
