Car is in the shop? Going on vacation? Just plain don’t have a car? That’s not going to be a problem. There are plenty of ways to get where you need to go without having to empty your wallet on daily car rentals or rely on the schedule of public transportation. Below are a couple of really great and reliable companies who will provide cars or ride sharing, both near and far.

Car2Go is great way to snag a car if you need it for only a short period of time. For $14 an hour or $.35 a minute, you can drive your very own smart car, fully charged, that’s also fully insured. All you have to do is reserve a car online or through your phone and locate the nearest car. When you wave your access card over the car sensor, it’ll automatically unlock, and voila! Your very own Smart Car. Best part is that when you’re done, park the car in a parking legal area, and end your trip on your phone. That’s it! That’s a pretty sweet deal, if you ask me. RelayRides take the car renting concept away from big companies and gives it to the community. Members can list their cars to be “rented” for a day rate or a weekly rate, depending on their usage. Then, those in need of a vehicle can browse through the vast number of listings, choose a car and reserve.
RelayRides has its own insurance, bill handling, and roadside support to keep their members’ cars safe. Owners also have the ability to have complete control of who will drive their car on a case-by-case basis. It’s a neat concept – Car owners make money on their unused car and renters have thousands of cars to choose to drive at a discounted rate. I call that a win-win.
ZimRide
ZimRide is based off the idea of carpooling with a social networking twist. Members have profiles complete with interests, music taste, and past feedback to make sure that your ride is enjoyable. This is a great way to get a lift for long distances with people of the similar age, interest, and will enjoy the same radio tunes. Members advertise where they’re planning on going, how many passengers they can take, and the cost per seat. For example, there are seats currently advertising from Los Angeles to San Diego for only $20!
