What is a FICM?

It is known that fuel is delivered into an engine to mix with the air and produce the power needed for a vehicle. The fuel has to be introduced into the engine at a specific time and the amount of fuel entering the cylinder is also crucial in determining the power generated by the engine. While the fuel injector is responsible for injecting the fuel into the engine, the system that instructs the injector about the quantity of fuel and the time for injection is the FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module). Fuel is injected into a diesel and gasoline engine at different stages of the engine cycle. While a gasoline engine takes in a mixture of fuel and air, the diesel engine takes in the air first, followed by the fuel later. The FICM is a unit in the diesel motor that controls the electrical impulses that open and close the fuel injectors. During the course of a diesel engine cycle, the engine starts with drawing the air in and compressing it. At the end of the compression stroke, the fuel is injected into the engine cylinders. The high pressure maintained in the engine aids in the burning of the air and fuel, without needing any external source. The Fuel Injection Control Module uses electrical impulses to actuate the pressure doors that allow the diesel fuel to flow to the cylinders. This system is set up this way because the diesel motor uses extremely high fuel pressure to fill the cylinders when the door is open and many systems would fail under such pressures. The fuel injection module ensures the optimal efficiency and performance of the engine.


Older fuel control modules included fly-weight governors which monitored the fuel injection mechanism. Present-day fuel injection control modules primarily include sensors and actuators. The module receives information from sensors such as the engine position sensor, fuel pressure sensor, injection pump speed sensor and intake temperature sensor. The injection modules available in the market mostly come pre-programmed or allow for programming during replacements.


Over time, the fuel injection control module can go bad, failing to produce the required output voltage. This will cause your fuel injector to improperly deliver fuel to the engine, which in turn will make the engine run lean, thereby lowering the power generated. The Check Engine Light in your dashboard will light up, indicating a problem in the engine. In severe conditions, the module will fail to generate the signal, resulting in a complete loss of fuel delivery. While checking the FICM, ensure that the battery and connecting wires are in order.
