New from BuyAutoParts: Magnetic Shocks and Struts!

Like turbochargers and dual-clutch transmissions, active suspension is supercar technology that has finally made its way to more and more “normal” cars. While there are many different takes on it, from air springs to hydraulic sway bars, they all have the same idea; set the car up to ride comfortably 99% of the time, with the option to stiffen everything up for better handling response when you need it. General Motors’ Magnetic Ride Control system, often referred to as MagneRide, seems to be one of the best-regarded systems out there. In addition to a wide variety of applications across GM’s catalog, they have also licensed the technology out to the Ford Mustang, various European luxury cars, and even Ferrari.

Unlike other adjustable or active suspension options, the beauty of magnetic ride control is that there are very few moving parts. Air suspension has rubber springs that can dry and crack with age and stress, and other adjustable dampers have small valves inside that can wear out after thousands of miles of constant movement. The shock absorber is a standard monotube damper body, but the fluid inside has iron filings in it. There are two electromagnets on each shock; one at each end. When they are activated, the fluid becomes thicker, which makes the shocks stiffer for less body roll and sharper handling response. Turn the electromagnet off, the fluid thins back out, and the ride becomes smoother. The electromagnets themselves are controlled by a central computer that reads speed, steering angle and many other parameters every thousandth of a second to predict the exact stiffness required on the fly.

While magnetic shocks are generally a little more reliable than air struts or hydraulic dampers, they’re still a wear item, and for a long time, the only source for replacements were pricey OEM parts from the dealership. But Duralo has now introduced a line of quality aftermarket replacement magnetic struts, guaranteed to fit and perform exactly the same as OEM, and backed by a one year, unlimited mileage warranty.

Duralo MagneRide shocks are 100% brand new parts, with no core charge or return required. They will install just like any other damper, with no programming required, so you won't get any warning lights on your dash either. These new items allow you to retain an expensive factory option, giving your car better performance and resale value (these cars are still valuable and this option is still in-demand!) than you would have if you deleted the system with cheaper shocks, while still providing considerable savings over dealer prices. Our catalog will continue to grow, but our first Duralo magnetic dampers are available below:
