Saginaw 68/86 Power Steering Gearbox Buyer’s Guide

The Saginaw 68 and 86 are far and away our best-selling power steering gear boxes, most likely because of how many cars they were in and how many of those are still on the road. As you can tell from the names, the 68 and 86 are two different gearboxes, but in practice they are 100% interchangeable. One has four mounting bolts, and one has three. Oddly enough, it’s the 3-hole box that’s stronger, so that’s what we carry. If your car is originally equipped with a 4-mount-hole gear box, this 3-hole variant will still bolt in exactly the same as OEM.

We carry four versions of this gearbox depending on what you’re looking for in your replacement:

82-00305 R (Order Here) - This gearbox is an OEM Saginaw casting, fully remanufactured in the USA. All our remanufactured steering gearboxes and racks receive a thorough cleaning and inspection, brand new bearings and seals, the port threads for the power steering lines are chased to ensure a reliable seal, and any potentially damaged gears are either re-machined or replaced. This gearbox will fit and perform exactly the same as OEM, including a steering ratio between 3 and 3-1/4 turns lock-to-lock.

82-00305 AN (Order Here) - This is a brand-new stock replacement gearbox designed to fit and perform exactly the same as the OEM Saginaw, with the same steering ratio too. This saves you time and money by not requiring a core deposit or return and gives you the peace of mind of having brand new steering components!

82-00305 HPR (Order Here) - Another OEM casting, also fully remanufactured in the USA. This gearbox is going to fit just like OEM, but during the remanufacturing process, we give it tighter gear clearances and a rotary valve for a more rigid steering feel. This is ideal for off-road applications, for better control at low speeds, but will also be an advantage for "pro-touring" muscle cars that see autocross use in the SCCA CAM classes.

82-00305 QR (Order Here) - This is another rebuilt OEM box, but it has a faster steering ratio of 2.75 turns lock-to-lock, vs 3.25 turns for the stock gearbox. This provides quicker steering response and better handling.

This gearbox does fit a lot of cars, but individual steering linkage pieces like rag joints, pitman arms and tie rods will likely be vehicle-specific.
